奄美大島北部の美しい海岸にも漂着したプラスチックごみは散乱している。散乱どころか、君臨している。発泡スチロールにびっしりと付着しているのはエボシガイ。貝と呼ばれてはいても、むしろカメノテなどに近い甲殻類の航海者だ。しかしプラごみは、どうにかしなくてはならないね。たとえば毎週日曜日の午前８時から９時までの１時間、ビーチ利用者全員参加でゴミ拾いをやったらどうだろう。焼石に水と思われるかもしれないが、やる価値はあるだろう。島全体としてそんな試みを果たせるところがあるとしたら、それは奄美大島。
　
Plastic waste washed ashore litters the pristine coastlines in northern Amami Oshima. Sadly, it reigns. Densely attached to the Styrofoam are helmet shells. Though called shells, they are crustacean navigators closer to percebes. But we must do something about this plastic waste. For example, what if every Sunday from 8 to 9 a.m., all beachgoers spent an hour picking up trash? Participation mandatory. It might seem like a drop in the ocean, but it’s worth doing. If any island could pull off such an initiative, it would be Amami Ōshima.
