徳山村は水になった村。巨大な徳山ダムがつくりだした徳山湖がしずかにひろがる。 Tokuyama Mura is a village that became water. The Tokuyama Lake, created by the immense Tokuyama Dam, extends its water following the contour line.

秋の色が爆発している。夕張の炭鉱町の跡をすべて水に飲みこんだ夕張シューパロダムから谷間を見て。 It’s a quiet explosion of autumn colors. The valley seen from the Shuparo Dam that has submerged all the traces of the mining town of Yubari in the water.

アメリカ兵士も先住民兵士も、どの地点で死んだかがわかっている。そこに個別に建てられた碑。シャイアンの生き方を守るために死んだシャイアンの戦士。 For both American soldiers and Indian warriors, their spots of death are known and commemorated with individual stones. Here lies a Cheyenne warrior who fought for the tribe's own traditional way of life.

ここでカスターが死んだ。1876年6月25日、モンタナ州リトルビッグホーンの戦い。スー、シャイアン、アラパホの部族連合軍に奇襲をしかけたアメリカ合衆国陸軍のカスター隊225名が全滅した。以後、合衆国は容赦ないインディアン殺戮をいっそう激化させる。ためらいなきジェノサイドへ。 Little Bighorn, Montana. This is where George Armstrong Custer died on June 25, 1876. Custer’s command attempted a surprise attack on the intertribal camp of the Sioux, Cheyenne, and Arapaho. All of the 225 US soldiers led by Custer were killed, including the colonel himself. After this, the US Army aggravated their genocidal war on native tribes.

ジョクジャカルタの市内にはけっこうな数の馬車が走っている。もちろん観光客向けだが、交通の混沌の中で馬たちを見るとほっとする。 In the city center of Yogyakarta you see not little number of horses pulling carriages. All meant for tourism, that is true, but it is so refreshing to see them in the chaos of urban traffic.

ジャワ島の伝統的影絵芝居といえばワヤン・クリ。人形はきれいに彩色されて、芝居はスクリーンの前で上映される。表から見ればカラフルな世界、裏から見ると影絵。王族たちは表に、庶民は裏に。 Wayang klit is the traditional puppet theater in Java. Flat puppets such as this one is used. Puppets are beautifully colored and the performance takes place in front of a screen. Seen from the recto the world is colorful and from the verso it is all shadows. The sultan and his entourage see the former, the commoners the latter.

ジョグジャカルタ近郊の火山ムラピを見にくと、このみみずくに出会った。 Went to see Gunung Merapi, an active volcano, near JogJakarta. There I met this cute horned owl!

ついにボロブドゥール寺院にたどりついた。壁面の浮き彫りにはたくさんの動物も。 Finally I have come to see the sublime Borobudur Temple! So many relieves are breathtaking, many of them depicting animals.

東京農大博物館の充実したコレクションのひとつが世界各国の鶏たち。そうか、こんなにたくさんの品種が飼われているんだね。この写真はミノルカ島の鶏。 Chickens from all over the world are gathered at the nice little museum of the Tokyo University of Agriculture. I'm sure you’ve never seen so many different breeds of chicken… The couple in the photo is the Minorca.

たまにはご近所探訪。東京農業大学「食と農」の博物館併設のバイオリウムへ。温室に入ればそこは未知の国でした。 It’s nice to pay more attention to your neighborhood from time to time. This is my first visit to the Food and Agriculture Museum of the Tokyo University of Agriculture near Kyodo! Once inside its Biorium, hey, it’s a world apart from the outside.
