岐阜県揖斐川町の秋の朝、川霧に「むかしの中国」を思う。今年はそういうタイトルの歌も作りました。 One autumn morning in the town of Ibigawa. The dream-like river mist makes me think of Old China. Hey, I wrote a song of that title this year!

田沢湖をめざして走る途中、すばらしい森に出会った。みずびたしの湿原がそのまま森を育てて。刺巻湿原。 On the way to Lake Tazawa, I came upon this magnificent forest. The waterlogged marshland itself nurtured the woods. Sublime.

この濃密な森は、オレゴン州にもまったく引けをとらない。秋田、美しい秋田。 This dense forest reminds me of Oregon. Akita is beautiful.

この不思議なモニュメントは、大潟村にある。ここはかつて日本で２番目に大きな湖、八郎潟だった。紅い球をつらぬく水平の棒が、海面の高さを表す。そう、ここはすべて海面より低い干拓地。 I came across this strange monument in Ōgata Village, Akita. This land was once Lake Hachirogata, Japan's second-largest lake. The horizontal iron rod piercing the red globe marks the sea level. Yes, this entire area is a polder---reclaimed land that is lower than the sea.

ブナの巨木の幹にはっきりと残された熊の爪痕。姿を見せないときでも、かれらはこっちを見ていると考えたほうがいい。白神山地にて。 A bear has left its claw marks on the trunk of a huge beech tree. Even when they don’t show themselves, the bears are certainly watching our every move. In the beautiful Shirakami Mountains.

かれらは互いに何の関係もなかった。でもかつて、ひとつの平面にこうして並んでいた。歴史はこうして制作される。フランクフルトにて。 It feels strange to think that they had nothing to do with each other. But it is a fact that their images co-existed on the same plane in 2015. This is how history is made. In Frankfurt.

太平洋の墓は砂と花に飾られる。島人たちの永遠の眠りのために。ラパ・ヌイ（パスクア島）にて。 The graves in the Pacific are adorned with sand and flowers, so they can assure the eternal sleep for the islanders. On Rapa Nui (Easter Island).

モアイさまには目がない、でもその目が怖い。歴史を見通して、人の愚行を見つめている。 Moai don’t have eyes, but their eyes are scary. They see through history and look into the folly of homo sapiens.
